ABAT Webinar Recording: Minnesota’s Cyanobacteria Problem
On August 6th, 2025, the Algal Bloom Action Team hosted a webinar to discuss the work being done on cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cHABs) in Minnesota. Cody Sheik, microbial ecologist, talks about the process of tracking and managing cHABs.
ABAT Webinar Recording: Lake Physics and Social Perspectives on Freshwater Harmful Algal Blooms
On August 2nd, 2025, the Algal Bloom Action Team hosted a webinar featuring two speakers who discussed how lake physics and internal nutrient loading can create toxic blooms, and how constituents are understanding and assessing HAB risk.
ABAT Webinar Recording: A Look at Cyanobacteria
On March 5th, 2025, the Algal Bloom Action Team hosted a webinar featuring the work of Rick Stumpf, Oceanographer with the NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science, who discussed cyanobacteria in the Great Lakes and other large lakes from satellite and Rebecca North, Associate Professor with the University of Missouri, who discussed her work studying winter cyanobacteria.
ABAT Webinar Recording: Resource Stoichiometry and Nutrient Influences on Cyanobacteria
On August 7th, 2024, the Algal Bloom Action Team hosted a webinar with Nicole Wagner, Assistant Professor at Oakland University, exploring how anthropogenic nutrient enrichment and imbalances of nitrogen to phosphorus ratios affects the eco-physiology and cyanotoxin concentration and quotas in cyanobacteria bloom-forming genera. This topic was explored at different scales from manipulative controlled laboratory experiments to whole ecosystem high-frequency monitoring.
ABAT Webinar Recording: Cyanobacteria in the Context of Climate Change
On June 5th, 2024, the Algal Bloom Action Team hosted a webinar focusing on cyanobacteria in the context of global climate change, including nitrate, reduced ice cover, and increased temperatures and light. This webinar featured the work of Rebecca North, Associate Professor at the University of Missouri’s School of Natural Resources and Silvia Newell, Director of Michigan Sea Grant and Professor at the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability.
