On April 6th, 2022, the Algal Bloom Action Team hosted a webinar featuring Dr. Christopher Gobler from Stony Brook University and Alexandra Trelep from the Illinois EPA. This webinar highlights Dr. Gobler’s work examining how climate change is impacting marine and freshwater ecosystems and overviews the history and current harmful algal bloom projects at the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.
ABAT Webinar Recording: Complexities in Predicting Harmful Algal Blooms
On November 3rd, 2021, the Algal Bloom Action Team hosted a webinar discussing how predicting when and where conditions are ripe for harmful algal blooms would ideally reduce the bloom’s impact on water quality and mitigation costs, and why it’s so complex. This webinar featured Justin Chaffin, Senior Researcher and Research Coordinator at Ohio State University and Stone Laboratory and Katie Foreman, Physical Scientist at the US EPA, as they discuss their research on the ecology and physiology of harmful algal blooms and how this work can be used to help solve the prediction puzzle!
ABAT Webinar Recording: Nearshore Attached Filamentous Algal Blooms
On July 7th, 2021, the Algal Bloom Action Team hosted a webinar featuring Yvonne Vadeboncoeur, Professor of Biological Sciences at Wright State University, who discussed her work on filamentous algal blooms and the rising threat they pose for nearshore habitats in lakes with high water quality.
ABAT Webinar Recording: Harmful Algal Blooms and Public Health
On May 6th, 2025, the Algal Bloom Action Team hosted a webinar highlighting how harmful algal blooms impact human and animal health. It features presentations from Victoria Christensen, Research Hydrologist with the USGS Upper Midwest Water Science Center and Virginia Roberts, Epidemiologist with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Discussion focuses on models to predict cyanotoxin mixtures that pose a human exposure risk and the CDC’s One Health Harmful Algal Bloom System.
ABAT Webinar Recording: Identifying and Monitoring Harmful Algal Blooms
On March 5th, 2021, the Algal Bloom Action Team hosted a webinar about identifying and monitoring harmful algal blooms (HABs) with Chris Jones of IHR—Hydroscience & Engineering at The University of Iowa and Greg Druschel of Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis.
